Wedding Checklist

When planning a wedding, you have to make many decisions. What should take precedence? The dress, suit, shoes, bouquets, venue, ceremony time, cake...? the list seem endless.

In my view, after setting a date and securing the venue, the next essential step is to book a celebrant.

Selecting a celebrant is crucial as you should feel at ease and have full confidence that the celebrant is the perfect match for you and your special occasion.

Did You Know?

Under Section 42 of the Marriage Act 1961, it is mandatory that a notice in writing of the upcoming marriage must be provided to the authorized celebrant at least one month before the ceremony date, but not more than 18 months in advance.

Don’t be disappointed! Don't hesitate, call now, and let's schedule a time to meet, get acquainted and discuss your special day.

Writing Your Own Vows

Here are some useful tips to keep in mind

  • Your vows can be light-hearted, funny, or sentimental – it's your special day and your vows.
  • Ensure that your vows are sincere and heartfelt.
  • Starting by expressing your love for your partner is always a great way to begin.
  • "Make it personal and reference a shared experience or special memory."
  • During the vow exchange, gaze into your partner's eyes. Consider holding hands as well.
  • Don't forget to share your wishes, hopes, and dreams for your future together.
  • Shedding tears of joy is completely acceptable! Just avoid excessive sobbing.
  • Refer to the messages or texts or emails exchanged throughout your relationship.
  • Avoid including overly personal details that could potentially embarrass your guests.
  • Seek inspiration from songs, poems, movies, or books that resonate with you and your relationship, ensuring authenticity and relevance.
  • Keep your vows brief and straight to the point; avoid turning them into an essay.
  • Think about your comfort level with public speaking. Your celebrant will assist you if you are not at ease.
  • Communicate with your marriage celebrant, as they are skilled in writing vows and will provide helpful suggestions.

Ever wonder what a marriage celebrant does?

Each wedding is unique, ranging from casual simplicity to elaborate personalized events with intricate details and decorations and themes. Ad more importantly every couple are unique and have their own love story.

In fact hours of work is done by the celebrant to make the day perfect in every way. I could not think of a more rewarding and fun career.

Planning

  • Meeting with the couple is the first step, allowing the celebrant to understand and connect with both parties. It's crucial to ensure compatibility with your celebrant. The initial meeting typically lasts around an hour. Expect the celebrant to inquire about various aspects to gain a better understanding of you.
  • Once the couple is prepared to progress, they can anticipate more inquiries from me about their unique love story and expectations for the big day and type of ceremony they desire. Typically, the celebrant will provide a questionnaire checklist for them to fill out.
  • During this time the celebrant will guide them through and take care of all the required legal documentation required.
  • Sighting the required personal identification and ensuring all is correct.

Scripting

  • The celebrant will then script and customize the ceremony to reflect the unique love story of the couple, drawing from the questionnaire and the initial meeting. Have you ever had to draft a script after a brief encounter with a couple's love story? It can be quite demanding. That's why gathering sufficient information about the couple and maximizing the first meeting is essential.

Structuring

Once the couple gives the green light to the draft, it's time to shift focus to the ceremony's structure. Along with many other tasks the celebrant will assist with the following tasks:

  • Writing personal vows or providing scripted vows.
  • Selecting Readings, Poems, and Music.
  • Incorporating Cultural, Spiritual, Family, or other Rituals.
  • Organizing the Ring Exchange details.
  • Coordinating the duration and sequence of all Ceremony elements.
  • Making Rehearsal arrangements and coordinating with Venues, Photographers, and Videographers.
  • How will they enter and exit for both the processional and the recessional?
  • Informing the bridal party about their responsibilities.
  • Confirming any additional requirements like a Signing table & chairs, PA system, or Props.
  • Providing instructions to guests before and after the ceremony.
  • Establishing backup plans.
  • Finally, the approved draft is refined while considering the above components.

Communication

As a Marriage Celebrant, effective communication is vital for a successful and beautifully conducted ceremony. It is crucial to have regular check-ins via phone, text, email, or meetings with the couple to ensure:

  • Everything is proceeding as planned.
  • The couple feels supported and guided.
  • All necessary documentation both legal and otherwise is submitted within the specified time frames.

On The Day

As your celebrant I ensure that I arrive at the venue at least 50 minutes prior to the ceremony -

  • Set up and create a welcome atmosphere and welcome your guests.
  • Set up the legal documentation ready for signing.
  • Set up PA system and sound check.
  • Liaise with all vendors.

After the Ceremony

I will lodge legal paperwork to the relevant BDM including :

  • Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)
  • Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage
  • Ensuring all the documentation is correct.
  • Including other associated documents that may be required.
